Khuzestan

آبشارهاي شوشتر

The area which is called Khuzestan today has in the ancient times been part of a vast territory and an independent state called "Elam".
The Elami people lived in that area some eight thousands years B.C., and probably they had been the first nation who established an independent state there.
The name "Khuzestan" has been chosen for the said area by the approval of the central government of Iran in 1923. It is likely that the name "Khuzestan" has been derived from the word " Khuz" which is the Elami style of calling  " Auzh". Auzh has been the name of an area in the territory governed by Elamis.

Khuzestan can be divided into a mountainous and a plain area. The mountainous area is mostly located at the northern and eastern parts of the province. It constitutes two fifth of the total area of the province. The plain area begins from the south of Dezful, Masjid Soleiman, Ramhormuz and Behbahan , and stretches to the coasts of Persian Gulf and Arvand River. This area comprises 65 percent of the total area of the province.
